Statement of Faith

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." - A.W. Tozer

Core Beliefs

The following are the core beliefs of The Journey FBC Lavonia
based on the foundational truths taught in the bible.
All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in
and flows out of these biblical doctrines.

The Bible

We believe that the Bible is the Word of God written down
by men who were inspired and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Because of this, we believe the Bible is without any errors and is also completely
trustworthy and applicable to each of our lives.
It is our authority for faith and practice (belief and conduct).

Scripture: Psalm 12:6; 119:9, John 17:17, Romans 15:4, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Hebrews 4:12, 2 Peter 1:20-21

God

We believe in one God who exists eternally in three persons:
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
All three persons of God, the Trinity, are united together
and fully God while remaining distinct from one another.

Scripture: Genesis 1:1, Deuteronomy 6:4, Psalm 90:2, John 1:1, 1 Corinthians 8:5-6

Father

We believe that God the Father is the creator of all things and
He is all-powerful, all-loving, and all-wise.
His greatness and His goodness are both unmatched.
He takes care of His universe like a good father and
works all things according to the counsel of His will.
It is only through Him that we have life and He is worthy of our trust and worship.

Scripture: Exodus 3:14, Leviticus 11:44-45, Psalm 23, Matthew 7:9-12, Ephesians 1:11, Romans 8:28, Hebrews 12:7-11

Jesus

We believe that Jesus is the eternal Son of God.
He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life in which
He demonstrated perfect obedience,
died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, rose from the dead defeating sin,
and ascended to heaven to be with the Father.
It is there that Jesus currently rules and reigns as
King over all things until He returns.

Scripture: Isaiah 7:14; 53:5, John 1:14-18, 1 Corinthians 15:3-5, Colossians 1:15-20, 2:13-15, 1 Peter 2:21-25

Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is fully God and personal like the rest of the Trinity.
He convinces people of their need for salvation and enables them to turn to God.
When a person places their faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit begins to dwell in them.
He comforts and guides all believers, empowers them to follow Jesus,
and is the seal of their salvation until Jesus returns.

Scripture: John 15:24; 16:7-14, Acts 1:8, Galatians 5:22-25, Ephesians 1:13-14

Humanity

We believe that all people are created in the image of God
and have inherent worth and value.
Men and women were created distinct but equal
and were created for relationship with God.
When Adam and Eve sinned, this willful act of disobedience separated
 humanity from their relationship
with God that only the grace of God can restore.

Scripture: Genesis 1:26-27; 3:1-7; 5:1-2, Psalm 8:4-8, Romans 1:18-23; 3:23; 5:12, Ephesians 2:1-3, James 1:15

Salvation

We believe that salvation is a free gift from God that is received
by faith in Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the cross for our sins.
Salvation is found in Jesus Christ alone and because no one else can mediate God's grace
while also taking the punishment for our sin.
The goal of salvation is a restored relationship with God where
we trust and follow Jesus and experience new life now and forever.

Scripture: John 3:3; 16, Romans 5:8-11, Galatians 5:15-21, Ephesians 2:8-10, Philippians 2:12-13, Hebrews 9:14-18, Titus 3:4-6, 1 John 5:11-13

The Church

We believe that the Church is made up of all believers
 and exists throughout the world.
Local churches are simply smaller expressions of the larger Church
whose purpose is to make disciples
of Jesus Christ to the glory of God.
Each church should be committed to teaching people to follow Jesus,
serving others out of love, and taking the Good News of the Gospel to all people.

Scripture: Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 2:41-47; 14:21-23, 1 Corinthians 12-14, Ephesians 1:22-23; 2:19-22, Hebrews 10:24-25, 1 Peter 5:1-4

Marriage

We believe that marriage is ordained by God as a
lifelong union between one man and one woman.
God created men and women uniquely to fit His design for marriage and marriage
exists as a picture of our relationship to God through Jesus.
Because of this, we believe that human sexuality expressed outside of such
a marriage is ultimately outside of God's purposes for His people.

Scripture: Genesis 1:26; 2:18-25, Matt 19:4-6, Ephesians 5:22-33, 1 Timothy 1:8-11

Eternity

We believe that people were created to live forever in relationship with God.
When Jesus returns, everyone will either be resurrected to life with
Him in the New Heavens and the New Earth or resurrected to judgment,
being separated from Him forever in Hell.

Scripture: John 3:36, Romans 8:16-18, 1 John 2:24-25, Revelation 21:1-5
